Since its establishment in 1988, Malta Freeport has experienced remarkable growth and is now a major maritime transhipment logistic centre in the Mediterranean region. There are three main activities that have been established, namely two container terminals, the distripark facilities and an oil products terminal.
In October 2004, the Government of Malta awarded CMA-CGM a 30-year concession to operate and develop further Malta Freeport Terminals. To fulfil this obligation, the carrier appointed Port Synergy to run the operation, which is a 50:50 joint venture between CMA-CGM and P&O Ports. The Group is obliged to ensure that Malta Freeport remains a common user facility, allowing different clients to avail themselves of the Port's services.
